Obituary

Jacob "Jake" P. Chrnko of Masury passed away at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 , in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, after an extended illness. He was 82.

Mr. Chrnko was born November 4, 1933, in Farrell, a son of John and Barbara Sever Chrnko.

He was a 1951 graduate of Farrell High School and received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Youngstown State University.

Jake served with the Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956 and was a member of the American Legion, Post 299, Sharon; and the Hickory VFW, Post 6166, Hermitage.

He retired in 1992 as the supervisor in the material department of General Motors Corp., Lordstown, Ohio, where he was employed for nearly 30 years. He later served as a consultant to General Motors during his retirement.

Jake was a member of St. Patrick Church, Hubbard. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, tending to his yard and flower gardens, walking in Buhl Park and cookies; and was a Pittsburgh Steeler fan.

Jake was a family man and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He cherished the time he spent vacationing with his family at Ocean City as well as his grandchildren's athletic events and band concerts.

He was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed mystery novels.

Jake was a 50 year member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, Lodge # 126, and loved polka music.

Surviving are: his wife of 55 years, the former Ruth Rokita, whom he married June 25, 1960, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, with the late Monsignor Geno Monti as celebrant; a daughter, Jolynne Bundy and her husband Keith, Cold Spring, KY; a son, Gary P. Chrnko and his wife Michelle, Masury; 4 grandchildren whom he adored, Dylan Bundy and his wife Maty; Devin Bundy; and Shannon and Tyler Chrnko; two great grandchildren, Noah and Silas; a sister, Dorothy Palumbo and her husband John, Masury; and several nieces and nephews.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Rd., Hermitage, PA 16148; or Brookfield Public Library, 7032 Grove St., Brookfield Township, Ohio 44403.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2016 , in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.


Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 , in St. Patrick Church, Hubbard, with Rev. Michael Swierz, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honors rendered by the Hickory VFW Honor Guard.
