Obituary

Jack A. Mahaven, 69, of New Castle passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 2, 2015. He was born in Pittsburgh on Feb. 12, 1946, to John J. and Catherine Rider Mahaven. Jack was a 1964 graduate of South Hills High School in Pittsburgh. He served in the Air Force from Sept. 14, 1964, to Sept. 13, 1968. Jack graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey in 1970, and served as a state trooper until his retirement in 1992. After his retirement, he was employed as a police officer for Pulaski Township. He later served as the director of code enforcement for the city of New Castle. Jack currently was employed as a bus driver for Union Area School District and, during the summer months, was a part-time driver for Golf Cart Supply in New Castle. Jack was an honorable, devoted and caring man, not only to those he served but especially to his wife, daughter and granddaughter. He was member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. Jack served as a volunteer member of the New Castle Area Honor Guard and belonged to the Polish Falcons Nest 146. He married the former Darlene M. Scotti on April 11, 1970, and she survives him at home. He is also survived by his mother, Catherine Mahaven of Pittsburgh; his daughter, Heather L. Mahaven of New Castle; his granddaughter, Mikayla C. Law of New Castle; his sister, Lynette Crimone and his brother-in-law, Ronald, of Pittsburgh; along with many loving nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his dog, Aijah; and his horse, Calypso. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Robert and Donald Mahaven. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, for St. Mary's Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Larry Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence County Humane Society, 628 Pearson Mill Road, New Castle, Pa. 16101; or the New Castle Area Honor Guard, 134 N. Jefferson St., New Castle, Pa 16101.
