Irene Mary "Babe" (Murphy) Moran, a former longtime resident of Flowers Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday evening, July 2, 2018, in St. Paul Villa's, Greenville.
She was 96.
Mrs. Moran was born July 29, 1921, in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of William F. and Irene Mary (O'Hara) Murphy.
She was nicknamed Babe as an infant by her doting parents and it remained with her all of her life.
The family moved to Sharon in 1935 and Babe graduated from Sharon High School in 1938.
She worked diligently on every class reunion, including the 70
th
, and organized monthly luncheons for interested classmates to get together.
Babe was employed by Bell Telephone as an operator and was an active member of their Ten Years Club and the Bell of PA Pioneers.
During 1944 and 1945 she, along with other young operators from the area, worked in Wilmington, DE, to assist with the high volume of overseas calls as WW II was coming to an end.
She often described those months of working around the clock and celebrating V-E Day in Philadelphia, as the most exciting time of her life.
She retired in 1976.
Babe married Albert Moran on October 12, 1946 in the former Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.
He preceded her in death in February of 1991.
Together they raised four children, Colleen Olivo (Tom), of New City, NY; Shelley Fleischer (Rick), of Sharon; James Moran (Saed Hussein), of Salem, MA; and William Moran, who preceded her in death in October of 2015.
Babe also leaves six grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Cathy Garnack, of Hermitage; and several nieces and nephews.
An active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, Babe was a member of its Women's Guild, where she served as an officer, and was a founding member of its Widows Group.
She spent countless hours volunteering at the church and the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell.
Babe was an avid bridge player and competed at the Buhl Club and was a member of many local bridge clubs.
She also traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East including the Holy Land and many trips throughout the United States and Mexico.
Babe loved to entertain and no occasion was too small to celebrate with candles, flowers and a meal to make someone feel special.
She often said how lucky she was to have a family who loved her, wonderful friends and a long healthy life.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2018, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018, in St. Joseph Church, Sharon, with Rev. Thomas Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
