Obituary

Service will be private for Ida Vinick Hertz of Whispering Oaks, Hermitage, who passed away Sunday morning, June 14, 2015. Ida was born Sept. 29, 1914, in Delavan, Wis., to Benjamin Vinick and Rebecca Cates Vinick. She attended Girls High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she excelled academically and was recognized for her exceptional sewing skills with the award of a sewing box and a sterling silver thimble. During World War II, Ida served her country by working for the General Accounting Office. In 1945, Ida married Wilfred "Bill" Hertz and they moved to Islip, Long Island, N.Y., where their daughters, Paula and Robin, were born. Ever the entrepreneur, Ida opened a uniform shop on Long Island and later became a customer service representative for the Estée Lauder Co., where she was one of the first to use a computer. Following successful careers, she and Bill retired to Florida in 1975. In retirement, Ida took classes at a local college, played bridge, read avidly, and kept up with politics and current events. After Bill's death, she became the office manager at a busy dental practice, travelled to the Caribbean and to Europe, and continued to knit and sew. She loved Florida and developed an active social life. At the age of 87, Ida left Florida to care for her ailing daughter, Robin, who lived in North Canton, Ohio. She devotedly attended to Robin's needs for three years. After Robin passed away, Ida moved to Hermitage to be close to her daughter Paula and her family. Ida was deeply loved and appreciated by her family and many friends. Last September, they came together to celebrate her 100th birthday with her, at a party given by her daughter. In addition to her husband, her beloved daughter Robin and her parents, Ida was preceded in death by her stepfather, Herman Weiss; and two brothers and a sister. She is survived by her daughter, Paula; Paula's husband, Fred Leeds, Hermitage; and her devoted granddaughter, Hilary Leeds. Contributions in Ida's memory may be directed to Robin Sue Hertz Memorial Scholarship at Community Foundation, 7 W. State St., Suite 301, Sharon, PA 16146. Calling hours: None.
