Henry V. "Herk" Johnson, Jr., 93, of Monroeville, PA and formerly of Sharon, PA passed away peacefully Thursday morning, August 8, 2024, in Arden Courts, Monroeville.
Born January 10, 1931, Herk was a son of the late Henry V. Johson, Sr. and Maud Estelle (Morgan) Johnson. He was a 1949 graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage, PA, and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Kent State University in 1956.
Herk served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1951 to 1952 during the Korean War. He previously served in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
For more than 30 years, Herk worked in material management at the Westinghouse Corp. He began as a materials manager at the Sharon Transformer Div and later worked as an inventory control traffic manager at the East Pittsburgh plant, retiring in 1985. He continued to work as a contracted expediter for several years.
Herk's passion for aviation led to obtaining his private pilot's license in 1970. He was well-known for his mechanical prowess and had the ability to repair anything from automotive engines to household appliances. Herk also enjoyed building model airplanes, snow skiing, playing golf with his best friend, Tom Butkavich, and target shooting with Rick Atkins.
His beloved wife of 70 years, Dawn (Widmyer) Johnson, whom he married July 16, 1954, survives at their home.
Herk is also survived by a son, David "Chip" Johnson (Debbie), of West Middlesex; a daughter, Kimberly Rogers (Matt), of Plum Borough; three grandchildren, Jacob Perna, Erica Rogers, and Jackson Rogers; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian.
In addition to his parents, Herk was preceded in death by a son, Dale Johnson; a sister, Mary Bennett; and a brother, Karl Johnson.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday (8-12-24) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
A funeral service will be held immediately following at 4 p.m. in the funeral home.
Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
