Obituary

Henry S. Altman, 91, of Harlansburg, passed away Sunday April 24, 2016 at Avalon Springs Nursing Center in Mercer.

Mr. Altman was born in New Castle on December 31, 1924 to the late Oscar and Charlotte Allshouse Altman.

Henry attended Harlansburg High School.

He was a WWII veteran entering the Navy on August 4, 1943 and was honorably discharged on April 7, 1946. Henry served during the Invasion of Normandy landing on Utah Beach. He was awarded the European Theater Ribbon with 1 Star, The American Theater ribbon and the Victory Medal.

Henry married the former Helen Burnside on September 22, 1947 and she preceded him in death on October 14, 1990.

He was a member of Teamster Local 261 for many years and was part owner of A & F Deliveries, retiring in 1986. Henry was a hard worker, spending much of his time outdoors on his tractor, and he took great pride in keeping a well maintained lawn.

On the weekends, he enjoyed traveling to various horse shows with his son, Gary, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Henry is survived by: a daughter, Darlene Miller and her husband Gary of Princeton; a son, Gary Altman and his wife Janet of Harlansburg; a sister, Shirley Barber of Hermitage; a brother, Clarence Altman of Harlansburg; two grandchildren, Vicki Bell and Christine Sherman; and three great grandchildren, Jordon Bell, Alyssa Sherman and Joshua Sherman.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Cloyd Altman.

Memorial contributions may be made in Henry's name to the Parkinson Foundation of Western PA, 575 Lincoln Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15202.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday ( 4-27-2016 ) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 111 W. Falls St. A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home, Pastor Ron Nagel of New Life Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Unity Baptist Church Cemetery, Harlansburg.
