Helen C. Acker, formerly of Sharon, passed away May 21, 2016, in Canton, N.Y., after an extended illness. She was 86.
Known to all simply as "Honey," she was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Kenmore, N.Y., the only child of Edward H. and Edith S. Cartwright.
She graduated from Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., in 1951.
On April 14, 1951, she married Albert E. Acker of Sharon, later judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer County. Judge Acker died Jan. 7, 1998. They built their residence on the family Yahres Farm next to Buhl Park in 1958 and Honey lived there until 2015.
Honey served on the Sharon school board for 14 years, the MCAR board and the Penn State Shenango advisory board, and volunteered with the Sharon General Hospital Auxiliary No. 2 for more than 20 years.
She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a strong supporter of Boy Scout Troop 3 in which her husband and four sons became Eagle Scouts.
She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, College Club of Sharon, the former Sharon County Club and Avalon Golf and Country Club at Buhl Park.
She and her husband were honored at Buhl Day. She was the driving force behind the construction of the Acker Gazebo in Buhl Park.
Her passions were her family, Buhl Park and her dogs, especially her royal standard poodles that were regularly walked in Buhl Park.
She was an extraordinary woman and a wonderful mother - smart, tough, supportive, pushy, gregarious and funny, simply a people person who believed that holidays and birthdays should always be celebrated as special occasions.
Surviving are her five children, a daughter, Mary Holland "Holly" Sheeser and her husband Scott, Olean, N.Y.; and four sons, all attorneys, David and his wife Linda, Potsdam, N.Y.; Peter and his wife Patricia, Mercer; Alan and his wife Anne, Coudersport, Pa.; and Andrew and his wife Molly, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, John, Aaron, Jacob, Leah, Andrew, Maggie, George, Sam and Fred Acker, and Mollie and Arch Irvin; two great-grandsons; and a stepbrother, John W. Bush and his wife Patricia, Waukesha, Wis.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Thomas Mitchell Acker.
