Harry T. "Tom" Palmer Jr. of Hermitage passed away at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015, in Clepper Manor, Sharon, after an extended illness. He was 82. Mr. Palmer was born March 24, 1933 in Farrell, a son of Harry T. and Anne T. Schuster Palmer. He was a 1951 graduate of Farrell High School and completed various courses in business management and insurance at ICS (International Correspondence School). Tom served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he served two years active Reserve and four years inactive Reserve. He was an active member of Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166, Hermitage, and its honor guard. Tom retired in 1995 as a foreman from the former Sawhill Tubular Products, Sharon, where he was employed for 44 years. He was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, where he was an usher and member of the Care and Concern Group and the Men's Club. He previously had been a member of the former St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon. Active in Scouting, Tom was a Cub Master and a Boy Scout Master for Troop 64 in West Middlesex and a commissioner for the French Creek Council. For his many years of service to the Boy Scouts, he was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. He was a certified first aid instructor and a former swimming instructor for the Kiwanis at the pool in St. John Episcopal Church, Sharon. Tom was a volunteer fireman for West Middlesex and Shenango Township. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and classmates and watching western movies. He also loved dogs. His first wife, the former Geraldine Ann Stefanick, whom he married June 23, 1956, passed away July 3, 1979. He is survived by his second wife, the former Bernice C. Orlosky Huff, whom he married Nov. 23, 1979, in Winchester, Va. They renewed their wedding vows on their anniversary in 1990 in St. Stanislaus Church, Sharon. Also surviving are a son, Jeffrey T. Palmer and his wife Patrice, Hermitage; a daughter, Karen A. Nestor and her husband Matthew, Reynolds; a stepson, William E. Huff Jr. and his wife Lisa, Hermitage; a stepdaughter, Bonnie J. Sowder and her husband Jeffrey, Port Orange, Fla.; four grandchildren, Tyler Palmer and his wife Sarah, and Cameron Palmer, all Hermitage; Ashley Miller and her husband Richard, Sharon; and Stephen Nestor and his wife Aislinn, Greenville; three step-grandchildren, Brooke Sowder, Port Orange, Fla.; and Madeline Huff and Matthew Huff, both Hermitage; four great-grandchildren, Arabella Nestor, Giuliana Nestor, Elijah Miller and Callie Palmer; and a sister, Barbara Gelesky, West Middlesex. In addition to his first wife, Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Walter Gelesky; and a nephew, Patrick Gelesky. The family would like to thank the staff at Clepper Manor for their exceptional care and kindness during Tom's illness.
