Mr. Wooten was born May 27, 1925, in Chicago, a son of Earl and Emily Grace Shorek Wooten. Moving to Greenville at the age of 5, he attended Greenville schools. He then served with the Army's 27th Division during World War II in the South Pacific, where he participated in the invasion of Saipan in 1944. He was a life member and past commander of Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6166, Hermitage, where he volunteered countless hours at the post and golf course and served on its honor guard. Harold retired in 1984 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was employed as a structural fitter and welder for 38 years. Whitey, as many knew him, was an avid golfer and belonged to many leagues throughout the years. He had two holes-in-one during his career, one of them at Hickory VFW Golf Course on the par 3 No. 3 hole, and the other at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course on the par 4 No. 9 hole (although from the No. 18 tee box). He was a 55-year member of what is now known as Buhl Community Recreation Center, Sharon, where he enjoyed playing handball and working out. A Civil War buff, he prized touring major battlefields and visiting the World War II Memorial and other sites with his grandsons. Surviving are: his wife, the former Gertrude "Gert" Marilyn Miller, whom he married Sept. 4, 1948, in Oakland Avenue United Methodist Church, Sharon; two daughters, Pamela J. Murphy and her husband Don, Waxhaw, N.C.; and Marilyn R.
