A funeral service will be held Saturday for Harold G. Tonks of Hewitt Road, Shenango Township. He passed away at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 77. Mr. Tonks was born May 11, 1935, in Sharon to Alvin and Fern Gribble Tonks. Harold attended several schools throughout Mercer County. He was active in Boy Scouts and swimming in his youth and continued as a Cub and Boy Scout leader with his sons. The first aid and life-saving he learned through Scouting served him well as a volunteer with the American Red Cross as a first aid and CPR instructor. He was a member and CPR instructor for the American Heart Association. Harold devoted many years training ambulance drivers in first aid prior to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training they now receive. As a result, he eventually obtained certification as an EMT and proudly worked in that field for many years. At his retirement, Harold was proud to have been honored with "Lifetime of Serving Humanity" recognition by his peers. Harold also worked for 39 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant where he worked in plant protection. He retired in 1992. An avid citizens band radio operator, he belonged to the CB Radio Club, going by the nickname, "Guinea Pig Kid." He belonged to a fish club and numerous other organizations. As a member of West Middlesex United Methodist Church, Harold enjoyed children, taught senior high Sunday school and worked with the church youth group for many years. Harold is survived by his best friend, Margaret "Peg" Reedy Tonks, whom he married June 25, 1955, in Boyers. Also surviving are his three sons, Gary Tonks and his wife Sheila, Hilliard, Ohio; Burt Tonks and his wife Cindy, Greenville; and Rodney Tonks and his wife Elissa, Ellwood City; nine grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Richard Tonks and his wife Norma, Sharpsville; and Terry Flaugher and his wife Mary, Sharon; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a beloved foster daughter, Deanna Reardon Leunberger; and a sister, Lois Perry Frantz.
