Harold "Harley" James Rodemoyer of Hermitage passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday evening, December 16, 2017, in his home with his cat, Simon, at his side. He was 83.
Mr. Rodemoyer was born July 22, 1934, in Fredonia, PA, a son of John Henry and Mayme Elizabeth (Frantz) Rodemoyer. He graduated in 1952 from the former Fredonia Delaware High School where he was a member of its 1951 state championship basketball team.
Harley retired in 1994 from what was Chemical Lehman Tank Lines where he worked as a truck driver for 34 years. He previously worked at Anderson Bus Company in Greenville as a tour bus driver.
He was a member of the St. John's Reformed Lutheran Church, Mercer.
Harley was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Hickory VFW, Post # 6166, Hermitage. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, hunting and going to his camp in Marienville, PA. Years earlier, he played baseball in several Mercer County leagues.
His wife, the former Eleanor "Ellie" Zachik, whom he married February 8, 1961, passed away August 27, 1994.
He is survived by a daughter, Cathy Jean Smith, Hermitage; a step-daughter, Debbie Zurawsky, Hubbard, OH; a step-son, David (Connie) Leon, West Middlesex; two sisters, Helen Rogers, Kennesaw, GA and Esther Taylor, Mercer; two brothers, Russell F. Rodemoyer, Mercer and Howard C. Rodemoyer, Tucker, GA; a grandson, Brandon Rodger Smith, Elkhorn, WI; and one great grandson, Ayden Alexander Smith.
Besides his wife, Harley was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Rodemoyer, Evelyn McKay and Isabelle McConnell; seven brothers, Richard, who died in infancy, and Paul, Leonard, William, John, Gail and Earl Rodemoyer; and a son-in-law, Rodger Smith.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hickory VFW Honor Guard ? Hickory VFW, 5550 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148 .
Calling hours: From 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday, December 22, 2017, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State Street, Sharon .
Services: 2 p.m. Friday , in the funeral home, with Rev. C. Charles Eckles, pastor of IHS Ministries, Hermitage, officiating. The Hickory VFW Honor Guard will render military honors immediately prior to the service on Friday , in the funeral home.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
