A memorial service will be Monday for Guy Francis McCracken of Hermitage, who passed away peacefully of natural causes at 9:30 a.m. Friday (1-16-15) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 90. Mr. McCracken was born in Pittsburgh on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924, and celebrated his 90th birthday on Easter Sunday 2014. He was the only child of Guy Francis McCracken Sr. and Nora McClellan McCracken. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Guy was raised in New Castle and graduated from New Castle High School in 1942. He attended Pennsylvania State University, University Park, for one year before entering the United States Army in 1943 at the onset of World War II. A decorated Army veteran, he served 25 months in the South Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged with several medals and citations on Dec. 11, 1945. He re-entered Penn State in September 1946 and graduated at the top of his class with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgy. Guy also studied at Cornell University as a part of his continuing education. He began his career as a metallurgical engineer in 1949 at the former Crucible Industries, Syracuse, N.Y. In 1959 he was transferred to Crucible's Midland (Pa.) Works. He was elected Midland's corporate vice president of operations and later group vice president of steel operations. In 1967 Guy was transferred to Crucible Industries' corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh and became the vice president of steel operations and production. In 1968 he left Crucible Industries and became president of the former Universal Cyclops, a division of Cyclops Corp., Pittsburgh. In 1973 he became the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the former Sharon Steel Corp., Farrell, where he worked until 1982. After his post at Sharon Steel, he became president of Jessop Steel, Washington, Pa., and retired in 1988 after 40 years in the steel industry. Guy set standards for civic involvement. He was a former member of the board of directors at Sharon Steel; the former McDowell National Bank; Sharon General Hospital, now Sharon Regional Health System; the Pennsylvania Economy League; and the American Iron and Steel Institute. He belonged to numerous professional and civic organizations throughout his life such as the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce. He served on the advisory boards at Pennsylvania State University's Shenango campus in Sharon and Thiel College in Greenville. He was honored by Penn State with the prestigious David Ford McFarland Achievement Award in 1976 for his work in metallurgy. He was the industrial corporate unit chairman for United Way of Mercer County and was honored in 1978 with its award of excellence. His whole-hearted support of the United Way as campaign chairman and his countless deeds significantly contributed to the repeated success of the United Way of Mercer County for five decades. Guy loved the game of golf and was a member of the Tri-State PGA. He belonged to several golf clubs including Laurel Valley Golf Club, Ligonier, Pa; Allegheny Country Club, Sewickley, Pa; Muirfield Village, Dublin, Ohio; and Kiawah Golf Resort in South Carolina, where he and his wife Earleen resided for many years. He was a member of Pittsburgh's Duquesne Club and served on the board of directors of the former Sharon Country Club, now known as Avalon Golf and Country Club at Buhl Park, Hermitage. He is survived by his wife, the former Earleen Ramsey. They married on June 19, 1946. He is also survived by: their three daughters, Carol Laskey and her husband Steve, Hermitage; Linda Leary and her husband Patrick, Sharon; and Nancy Netzel, Hermitage; grandchildren, Brady Milligan; Riley (Jaime) Milligan; Eric, Brandon and Adrienne Laskey; Patrick (Christie) Leary; Megan (Michael) Grandy; Evan (Jennifer) Leary; Elizabeth (Jeremie) Rupnik; Ramsey Netzel; and Ella Netzel; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Mia, Monica, Aiden, Madeline, Avery, Paige, Abigayle, Finnegan, Cullen, Jeremie, Elena and Stefan.
