Grant C. Smith, 90, a longtime resident of Union Twp., passed away Tuesday evening, April 9, 2019, in UPMC Jameson Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born March 10, 1929, a son of the late Grant C. Smith, Sr. and Ethel (Covert) Smith. After graduating from New Castle High School in 1948, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Era.

Grant went on to receive his training as a refrigerant specialist in Chicago, IL, and later became certified as a master welder. He was employed by Mesta Machine, New Castle, for more than 20 years, and previously worked for Superior Sand and Supply Co., New Castle, and Republic Steel, Youngstown, OH. He ultimately retired in 2002 from the Ivor J. Lee Co. in Wheatland, PA. Grant also owned and operated Smith's Drive In, on Rt. 422 East., which he proudly designed and constructed on his own.

Grant was a devout member of St. Mary Church – Mary, Mother of Hope Parish, New Castle.

Grant believed in the value of hard-work and tirelessly supported and provided for his family. He passionately gave up his time to friends and family in need of his help. Grant also loved animals, and always had a beloved dog by his side over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, the former Leona Carrigan, of Union Twp., four children, Kathleen (Gary) Kwolek, Patricia (Mark) Caughey, Grant (Nancy) Smith, III and Joan Smith, all of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Mark, Joshua, and Shawn Caughey, Jessalyn (Craig) Wheatley, Benjamin (Erika) Smith, Christopher (Britney) Kwolek, and Hunter Rozzi; four beloved great grandchildren, Bradshaw and Brynley Wheatley, Gwendolyn Smith, and Kamila Kwolek.

In addition to his parents, Grant was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Smith.

Calling hours will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday (4-14-19) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday (4-15-19) in St. Mary Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, with Rev. Victor J. Molka, Jr., as celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Union Twp.
