Glenn Ralph McQuiston, Sr, of West Kingston, Rhode Island, former long time resident of Sharon passed away peacefully at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday (5-13-09) at his residence in Rhode Island of natural causes. He was 92.
Glenn was born on July 21, 1916 in Sharon, Pennsylvania the son of Ralph and Myrtle (Mason) McQuiston. Glenn graduated from Sharon High School in 1934 and attended Thiel College.
He was a life-long member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church,Sharon. In recent years, Glenn resided with his daughter Louise in Rhode Island and attended the Armenian Euphrates Evangelical Church in Providence, RI.
Glenn began his extensive business career at the former Sharon Steel Corporation as an office boy and rose to the position of Vice President of Purchasing and Traffic in 1971. After taking an early retirement from Sharon Steel, Glenn's entrepreneurial, and some would say, real career commenced. Glenn was the founder, principal shareholder and CEO of a number of enterprises including McQuiston Marine Lines, which operated numerous tugs and barges throughout the intracoastal waterways, Baldwin Trading Co which was both a commodities trading and stock brokerage firm, International Trading Company of San Francisco, CA. Glenn was an Independent Licensed Securities Broker and right up to his passing continued to hold a seat on the Kansas City Board of Exchange. Glenn possessed a lifelong passion, first begun as a young boy, for investing in securities and commodities and was a respected trader in platinum.
For more than 70 years, Glenn was an active volunteer of the Salvation Army including a stint as a board member. He was an active member of the Sharon chapter of the Kiwanis Club and the Sharon Country Club. Glenn was also a member of the Thiel College Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society and was a recognized expert of the U S Canal Zone issues. In later life he was an active participant in World Affairs discussion groups. From this love of stamp collecting, he developed a number of lifelong friendships with other collectors throughout the country.
Glenn was a self-taught accomplished chess player who began at seven. Although unranked, because rankings were not what mattered to Glenn, he routinely played and defeated top ranked players. Because, unlike the ranked players he never lost his sense of humor and charm when he played. During World War II, he volunteered to play with German POW officers interned at Camp Reynolds near Greenville, Pa. When asked about this episode recently he replied, 'They were good, too. But, hardly ever lost to them.' He also played chess by mail, during World War II, with an American pilot. Throughout the war, is chess set stood in the family living room with the game ongoing waiting for the pilot's next move to arrive by mail. Glenn was also an active sailor, golfer, skier, tennis player, avid reader and denizen of libraries. At the outset of WW II, but prior to Pearl Harbor, he traveled to Canada in a failed attempt to enlist in the Canadian Air Force. Subsequently, he was also denied per!
mission to enter the US armed forces as his work at Sharon Steel had been determined to be too critical to the war effort.
Glenn met Lee Venezie, his future wife, at a dance in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Glenn was preceded in death by Lee and his son David McQuiston. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Phyllis Ubelacker and Helen Letscher and his elder brother Howard McQuiston. Glenn is survived by his children Melinda Swanson of San Jose, WA, Glenn McQuiston, Jr. of Seattle, WA, Louise Manoukian of West Warwick, RI and Margaret Wilkins, Seattle, WA and by his five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
