Gerda Widmyer of Sharon passed away at 11:04 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018, in Hospice of the Valley, Poland, Ohio, after an extended illness.
She was 73.
Mrs. Widmyer was born March 20, 1945, in Czechoslovakia, a daughter of the late John and Josephine Anhorn.
She immigrated to the United States in 1952 and married Arthur Lee Widmyer on April 11, 1963 in Asbury Park, NJ.
She and Art moved to Sharon in 1963 and she became a naturalized citizen the following year.
Gerda was well known throughout the county and beyond for her devotion to animals.
She loved animals and cared deeply for their well being.
She was a longtime humane agent in Mercer County and started the Animal Aid Society in the 1970's.
She also started the Humane Society of Mercer County in the 1980's and most recently Animal Advocacy of Mercer and Crawford counties.
Gerda was responsible for rescuing thousands of animals and was recognized for her voluntary efforts with citations from Senators, Governors and President Bill Clinton.
Surviving is her husband of 55 years, Art Widmyer; three sons, Christopher L. Widmyer, of Pulaski, Pa.; Scott A. Widmyer, of Sharon; and Troy J. Widmyer and his wife Barbara, also of Sharon; seven grandchildren, Ian, Madeline, Miranda, Jacob, Keegan, Lily and Ava; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Johnston, of Meadville.
Besides her parents, Gerda was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alyssa Widmyer; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Widmyer; three brothers and a sister.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Mercer County, P.O. Box 1046, Sharon, Pa. 16146.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2018, in the funeral home, with Rev. Bruce Rosa, officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
