Gerald L. Somich, 435 Patton Ave., Farrell, passed away of natural causes at 2:42 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell, after a brief illness. He was 68.
Mr. Somich was born April 5, 1943 in Sharon a son of the late Leo and Wilma Sopko Somich.
He attended St. Ann's Parochial Grade School and was a 1961 graduate of Farrell High School.
Following his graduation, Jerry began his working career at the former NE-HI Bottling Co., Farrell. He then worked at Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant for 30 years and retired as a car blocker when the plant closed in the early 1990's.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon. Jerry was a car buff and enjoyed maintaining his 1972 Ontario orange corvette for many years. He also loved to take care of his yard and working outside. He was a former member of the New Deal Club, Farrell.
Surviving are: his loving wife at home, the former Dolores Piehuta, whom he married October 28, 1967 in the former St. Joseph Church, Sharon. He also leaves a sister, Sandra Konnen and her husband Dennis and their son, Jason, all Farrell; two brothers-in-law, Eugene Piehuta and his wife Cheryl, Sharpsville; and Jerome Piehuta and his family, Brookfield; and an aunt, Eleanor Sopko, Sea Girt, NJ.
Besides his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his mother- and father-in-law, Mary and Walter Piehuta.
Dolores would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell, and Family Hospice and Palliative Care, Hermitage, for their exceptional health care; and Rev. Glenn Whitman, pastor of St. Joseph Church, Sharon; and Rev. Dominic Verdell, associate pastor of Grace Chapel Community Church, Hermitage, for their spiritual care and guidance.
