Gerald "Jerry" Martin Slezak, Sr. of Hermitage passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, following a brief illness.
He was 79.
Mr. Slezak was born November 18, 1936, in Farrell, the youngest of six children to John and Emma Kolesar Slezak.
A lifelong area resident, he was a 1954 graduate of Farrell High School and a 1958 alumnus of Thiel College, Greenville, where he received his bachelors degree in economics.
He also served with the United States Army Reserves.
Jerry was employed as an office manager at the former Golden Dawn Foods and later Peter J. Schmitt Co., both in Sharon.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage.
Jerry was a quiet, sensitive man of few words.
He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather and loved to see his children's and grandchildren's events, even if it involved traveling to New York, Virginia or across Pennsylvania.
He will be sadly missed by all.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Margaret "Peggy" Rossi, whom he married Nov. 17, 1962, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell; five children, Gerald "Jerry" M. Slezak, Jr. and his wife Yvette, Fredericksburg, VA; Mark Slezak and his wife Connie, Hermitage; Scott Slezak, Philadelphia, PA; Carolyn Konopski and her husband Mike, Williamsport, PA; and Brian Slezak and his wife Sarah, West Grove, PA; and 13 grandchildren, Erin, Jenna and Carley Slezak, all Fredericksburg; Kaitlyn, Drew and Ellie Slezak, all Hermitage; Natasha Slezak, Philadelphia; Daniel, Derek and Jacob Konopski, all Williamsport; and Avery, Maya and Mason Slezak, all West Grove.
He also leaves a brother, Melvin Slezak and his wife Dorothy, Sharpsville; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Slezak, Greensburg, PA; and Rheta Slezak, Corpus Christi, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
Jerry and his wife enjoyed traveling to many world-wide destinations, including many trips to their favorite place, Disney World.
He also enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking and walking.
Years earlier he assisted with Boy Scout Troop # 63 in Hermitage and enjoyed singing with the Shenango Valley Chorale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Lester and Elmer Slezak; and a sister, Margie Vagasky.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Calling hour will be from
10 a.m.
until the time of service on Saturday, March 12, 2016, in the parlor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3325 Morefield Rd., Hermitage.
Funeral service will be
11 a.m.
Saturday
, in the church, with the Rev. Gary Nelson, pastor, officiating.
Interment: Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Hermitage.
