George Tyillian, 2876 Morefield Rd., Hermitage, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Sunday (1-11-09) in the hospital of the Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 77.
Mr. Tyillian was born Oct. 8, 1931 in Sharpsville a son of the late George Tyillian, Sr. and Barbara Szita Tyillian.
He was a 1950 graduate of Sharpsville High School.
Following high school, George worked for two years at the former Sharon Steel Corp. before serving with the US Army during the Korean War. He was a recipient of many medals, including the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and also served with the US Army Reserves. George returned to Sharon Steel Corporation's Farrell plant in 1954 where he worked in the finishing department until 1966. He was then hired at the new Lordstown (Ohio) Plant where he was a roll test driver and retired in 1993 with twenty-seven years of service.
He was a charter member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, where he was active for many years. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Local # 112 and the American Legion, Sharon Post # 299. George was extremely dedicated to his family and was a loyal friend. He enjoyed many times he shared with them boating, fishing and traveling.
Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Mary Amelia Meier, whom he married June 4, 1955 in the former St. Joseph Church, Sharon; his children and grandchildren, Susan M. Piccirilli and her husband Michael and their son Andrew, Lawrenceville, Georgia; Gregory J. Tyillian, Clearwater, Florida; Martin J. Tyillian and his wife Karen and their children, Jon Thomas and Amy Lee, Sharpsville; Timothy G. Tyillian and his wife Julie and their children, Chandler, Chloe and Chase, West Middlesex; and Gerard M. Tyillian and his wife Melissa and their children, twins Daniel and Stephen, Hermitage; a brother, Kerney Tyillian and his wife Maureen, Louisville, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Arlene Bieda, North Jackson, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas; and a brother, John Tyillian.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Notre Dame Church or School, 2335 Highland Rd.; or to the Cancer Care Center, 2320 Highland Rd., all Hermitage, PA 16148.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday (1-14-09) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday (1-15-09) in Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with Msgr. Edward J. Zeitler, senior associate pastor, as celebrant.
Entombment: St. Rose Cemetery Mausoleum, Hermitage, with military honors rendered by the honor guard of the Wheatland American Legion and the W. Middlesex VFW
