Obituary

George Robert "Bob" Stoner, 85, of Shenango Township, passed away at 4:07 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 in UPMC Jameson Hospital.

Mr. Stoner was born August 28, 1931, in New Castle, a son of the late Thomas John and Elizabeth Dollahan Stoner. He was a 1949 graduate of New Castle High School.

Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 25, 1952 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on October 15, 1954, after serving over sixteen months in Korea. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

After the war, he was employed by Francis Auto Sales for 32 years as a mechanic. In 2004 he retired from the Lawrence County Government Center, where he worked in the maintenance department.

He was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Parish. Bob loved to sing and was a member of the Eintracht Singing Society for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Mae Orres Stoner, whom he married in 1956, in Sts. Philips and James Church; a son, Robert Shawn Stoner and his fiance Lori Smiley of New Castle; two sisters, Betty Jane Seiler of New Castle; and Marilyn Solomon and her husband David of Basye, VA; one brother, Jack Stoner and his wife Judy of New Castle; and two grandchildren, Carlee and Daniell Stoner.

Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, William Red Stoner and a sister Doris Richardson.


Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2016 in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls Street.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. on Monday September 12, 2016 for St. Vincent Depaul Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Frank Almade, Pastor, officiating.

Prior to leaving for Mass, military rites will be rendered in the funeral home by the New Castle Area Honor Guard at 9:00 A.M. Burial will be in Sts. Philip and James Cemetery.
