A funeral service will be held Wednesday for George R. "Bob" Phillips of Shenango Township. He passed away at 11:37 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015, in his home, after an extended illness. He was 80. Mr. Phillips was born May 22, 1934, in Wheatland, a son of Lauren and Yesota Paulina Phillips. He was a 1952 graduate of Farrell High School and served as a military policeman with the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. Bob retired in 1986 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he worked for 40 years in plant protection. He was also the chief of police for West Middlesex for nearly 10 years and a former police officer and supervisor for Shenango Township. Bob was an active member of First Assembly of God, Hermitage, where he served as an usher. He enjoyed playing bocce at his daughter's home and spending time with his family. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. Surviving are: his wife of 55 years, the former Betty L. Powell, at the residence; a daughter, Robin L. Strohmeyer and her husband Greg, Mineral Ridge, Ohio; two sons, Robert W. "Bob" Phillips and his wife Stephanie, Rock Hill, S.C.; and Rodney A. Phillips and his wife Diane, Hanover, Pa.; six grandchildren whom he adored, Taylor, Gregory and Abbey Strohmeyer; and Grant, Felecia and Jake Phillips; two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Braelynn; a brother, William "Bill" Phillips, Lawrence County; and an honorary son, Michael McFarland, Volant. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Lori Udell. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Assembly of God, 1455 N. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, PA 16148. Military honors will be rendered by the West Middlesex VFW Post 6233, Wheatland American Legion Post 432 and Farrell VFW Post 5286 Honor Guard immediately following the service in the church.
