George Battyanyi, 80, of Sharon, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in his home.
Mr. Battyanyi was born on June 19, 1946, in Sharon, a son of the late James Battyanyi and Violet (Opalensk) Battyanyi Schiaville. A lifelong area resident, he attended Farrell School District.
He was employed for 42 years at Sharon Steel’s former Farrell plant, working as a crane operator and maintenance man, eventually retiring from Defurco.
George was a Free and Accepted Mason, Scottish Rite Cathedral, New Castle.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed walking his dog at Mahaney Park.
He will be remembered for his joking personality and his uncanny ability to prank people. He also loved to cook and cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Cathie Mortimer; two sons, Jesse Lonsinger and his girlfriend, Kristy Simeon, of Masury, OH, and Shannon Woodward and his wife, Shana, of Patagonia, PA; three grandchildren, Kason and Gavin Woodward, and Kylee Gill. Also surviving are two sisters, Maria Marzano and her husband, Bob, of Hermitage, and Valerie Gammon, of Mercer.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his step-father, Kenneth Schiaville; and a brother, James “Jimmy” Battyanyi.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to an animal shelter of the donor’s choice.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday (09/16/2026) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State St., Sharon.
