Obituary

George Dean Axe, 343 South Oakland Ave., Sharon, passed away at 7:06 p.m. Thursday (8-9-12) in Allegheny General Hospital following a brief illness. He was 64.

He was born May 12, 1948 in Sharon the son of George and Marjorie Rainey Axe.

A lifelong area resident he graduated from Sharon High School and began working at an early age for the former Sharon Steel Corporation's Farrell plant.

He was called to duty on November 18, 1968 and served with the United States Army's 1st armored division in Vietnam. A decorated veteran he was honorably discharged on November 1st, 1974 with the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnamese Gallantry Medal. He was a decorated marksman having achieved the Expert Rifle status and the 1st class Gunner status with the M-60.

Locally he was a member of the Sharon American Legion post 299, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338.George loved the game of Baseball and enjoyed coaching for the Sharon Little League for 18 years. He was especially proud of his 1987 team that made it to the State playoffs where they earned 4th place. He loved spending time with his family and rooting for his Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers.

His wife the former Judy A. Atterholt whom he married on September 14, 1968 survives at home.

He also leaves his two daughters, Michelle "Shelly" L. Axe and her fianc Michael Quinn, and Sheila A. Norris and her husband Larry, and his son George D. Axe III, all of Sharon; his grandchildren, Jarray, Lashaya, and Iresha Norris, and his step grandchildren, Marquise Norris, Charmella Phillips, and Emily Smanko. He is also survived by his two brothers, Raymond Axe, CA, William Cornthwait, Colorado, his step sisters, Donna Holter of West Middlesex, PA, Rev. Rita L (Robert) Staul of Glouster, VA, step brother Andrew (Jean) Olshavsky of Titusville, FL, his sisters and brothers in law, Jackie Mitcheltree, Sharon, Mary Jane Hammond, Sharpsville, Jennie Hammond and her husband Robert, Sun City AZ, Robert Atterholt and his wife Lois, Reynolds, and Joseph Atterholt and his wife Mary Ellen, Fl., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step father Andrew Olshavsky, a brother, David Olshavsky, and his grandmother Clara Axe, and his aunt Virginia Axe who both raised George.

Funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday (8-15-12) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Leon Avery Jr., pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Sharon, officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Sharon, with full military honors provided by the Sharon Honor Guard.
