Gary Eugene Uhl, Capital Nursing Home 3000 Holston Lane, Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (11-2-11) at 3:58 a.m. in WAKEMED Health & Hospital, 3000 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh, NC following an extended illness. He was 63.
He was born November 12, 1947 in Sharon, PA, the son of William E. and Helene Rodgers Uhl.
He lived most of his life in Sharon and later he moved to Boardman, OH. Gary has lived in Raleigh, NC, for the past 2 ½ years to be close to family.
He attended Brady Court School for the Disabled and he also attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Sharon.
Gary was a familiar face at MCAR in Hermitage for many years where he was a Supervisor in their Workshop. Although he was born with Spina Bifada, he loved sports and was an avid fan all of his life. He watched Little League Baseball as a young boy and later enjoyed watching major league baseball, football and basketball. He could be seen rooting for his Indianapolis Colts and Peyton Manning during football season, and the Los Angeles Lakers during Basketball season. Gary was limited in what he could do but he loved being outside where he could watch and enjoy the people around him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he will be sadly missed by his family who loved him dearly.
He is survived by three sisters, Joanne E. Zedaker, and her husband Robert, Spring, TX; Mary Carole Redmond, Lower Burrell, PA; Dolores U. Batts and her husband Robert (whom Gary affectionately called 'The Colonel'), Raleigh, NC; one brother, Richard W. Uhl, Charlotte, NC; 11 nieces and nephews. David and Robert Zedaker, Houston, TX; Cindy Zedaker, Hermitage, PA; Bryan Redmond, Warren, OH; Karen Kearney, State College, PA; Michael Shemancik, Kernersville, NC; Tammie Kelley, Raleigh, NC; Scott Hatfield and Michelle Koszer, Las Vegas, NV; Lisa Frattaroli, Waxhaw, NC; and Tiffany Bright, Crestwood, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Helene Uhl, a sister, Rosemary U. Hatfield, a nephew, William Zedaker and his niece Suzanne Zedaker.
Calling hours: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday (11-7-11) and from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday (11-8-11) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 1090 E. State St. Sharon.
