Obituary

Dr. Frederick G. Uberti of New Wilmington, PA passed away surrounded by his family at 1:42 p.m. Saturday (2-20-16) in UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, of complications following surgery. He was 76.

Dr. Uberti was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Philadelphia, a son of Frederick and Josephine Scardino Uberti.

A graduate of Bishop Neumann High School in Philadelphia, he attended Villanova University and earned his bachelor's degree from LaSalle University, both Philadelphia. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency and internship at Grandview Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Uberti began his medical career in 1969 as the first internal medicine physician at the former Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital in Farrell, which is now known as UPMC Horizon Hospital. He was a physician at UPMC for 47 years and its director of medical education for more than 20 years. He also served as the director for the internal medicine residency program for 38 years and was vice president of Medical Affairs.

Dr. Uberti was a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (FACOI) and a member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

He was selected as one of the outstanding physicians in the Pittsburgh region by Pittsburgh Magazine and received many awards for teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. The critical care unit at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Farrell was dedicated in his honor for service above and beyond the call of duty and he was named Outstanding Physician by the hospital in 2011.

Dr. Uberti was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Mission Church, New Castle, where he served as a lecturer and usher and participated in the Vestry.

He was an avid Philadelphia sports team fan, particularly the Eagles, and enjoyed traveling and golfing.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Patricia "Pattie" Cawthorne, whom he married September 20, 1986; two sons, Dr. Edward J. Uberti and his wife Victoria; and Dr. Anthony Uberti and his wife Dr. Jill Uberti, all Hermitage; a daughter, Donna Uberti and her husband Kurt D. Toth, S. Pymatuning Township; 9 grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Ashley, Gregory, Alexa, Dominic, Brittani (Daniel), Anthony, Dominic, Vincent and Kurt, II; two brothers, Edward Uberti and his wife Margaret, Kutztown, PA; and Robert Uberti and his wife Barbara, Swedesboro, NJ; several loving nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, James Cawthorne and his wife Deborah, Charleston, SC.

Dr. Uberti was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Jacquelene Tilotta Uberti; and his mother- and father-in-law, Jane and James Cawthorne.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity Episcopal Mission Church, 212 N. Mill St., New Castle, PA 16101; or to the Shenango Valley Children's Transplant Fund, c/o FNB, 3320 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday ( 2-24-16 ) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday ( 2-25-16 ) in St. John's Episcopal Church, Sharon.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
