IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frederick J.
Hoffman
December 10, 1942 – October 18, 2024
Frederick J. Hoffman, 81, of Hermitage, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2024, in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell.
Mr. Hoffman was born on December 10, 1942, in Sharon, son of the late Harold and Lucille (Uber) Hoffman. A 1961 graduate of Farrell High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University and his master's degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington. He also completed post-graduate work at The Pennsylvania State University and The University of Pittsburgh.
Fred was employed by the Sharon School District for 36 and a half years. He began as a teacher and served as the principal for more than 20 years.
A philanthropist and politician, he spent multiple terms on Sharon City Council, many of which he was the president. His political and charitable endeavors are too numerous to mention, but he was most proud of serving on the Penn State-Shenango Valley Campus Board of Directors, the American Council of Cities, and The League of Cities. Fred was also instrumental in bringing the DARE program to Sharon. He also served in several leadership roles at The First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, where he also sang in the choir. But he may be best known for his several years as the game announcer for Sharon High football games, where he was known as "the voice of Tiger Stadium."
He was a Penn State and Cleveland sports fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren and looked forward to spoiling them.
He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Keen and her husband Douglas, Sharon; a son, Richard Hoffman and his wife Lynda, Pittsburgh; and four grandchildren, Garth Hoffman and his wife Rachel, Orion Hoffman and his wife Hannah, Declan Hoffman, and Shae Keen.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Stewart.
The family requests that people can honor his memory by making a donation to a program at your local elementary school that ensures food security for needy students, or to make a contribution to your local youth sports program.
In keeping with Fred's wishes, there are no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.McGonigleFuneralHomeandCrematory.com
