February 22, 1930 – May 26, 2017
Frank Safin, a longtime resident of Sherman Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully Friday evening, May 26, 2017, in Golden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Mannington, New Jersey. He was 87.
Mr. Safin was born February 22, 1930, in Ritceyville, PA, a son of George and Elizabeth (Velko) Safin. He was raised in Richeyville and was a 1948 graduate of Bethlehem Center High School, Fredericktown, PA.
Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
Following his honorable discharge in December of 1953, Frank relocated to Sharon, PA, seeking employment in the booming steel manufacturing industry. After a lifelong successful career, he retired from the former Sawhill Tubular Division, Wheatland, where he performed many of the tasks associated with making tubing, including, overall quality inspector for the products. Frank also operated a small grounds-keeping business which provided services to many professional buildings and doctors' offices in the area.
He was a longtime member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon.
Frank was a member of VFW Post 5286, Farrell, and VFW Post 1338 and American Legion Post 299, both Sharon.
He enjoyed golfing and singing, particularly the hymns in church and patriotic songs in any forum. He loved spending time with his family at picnics and while having BBQ's in his backyard.
His wife, the former Lorraine L. Mattis, whom he married November 13, 1954, in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Brownsville, PA, passed away January 10, 2013.
Surviving are: a daughter, Gloria J. Hunt, St. Petersburg, FL; a son, Francis J. Safin and his wife Julie, Salem, NJ; and three grandchildren, Kate and Michael Safin; and Ashley Hunt.
In addition to his wife, Frank was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson, Lawrence Francis Sample.
There will be no calling hours.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday ( 6-5-17 ) in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 370 Spruce Ave., Sharon, with Rev. Mathew J. Ruyechan, pastor, as celebrant.
Military honors will be rendered following the committal service at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, Hermitage.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Hermitage.
