Obituary

Florence Carmela Laton, 93, of Hermitage, formerly of Hudson, FL, passed away Friday afternoon, June 14, 2024, at UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell, PA.

Mrs. Laton was born February 4, 1931, in Flushing, NY, a daughter of the late Americo and Rosalie (Zaccaro) Forgione. She was a graduate of the former Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School, Brooklyn, NY.

While residing in New York, Florence was employed by American Airlines, Long Island Water Authority, and the Northport High School. Florence moved to Florida with her husband Stephen in 1982 and worked as an administrative assistant at Bayonet Point High School and later earned her substitute teaching certification from the State of Florida.

Florence enjoyed the friendship and support of her friends and neighbors in Meadow Oaks. She looked forward to luncheon outings and serving on the activities committee at the local club house. One event she especially cherished was the annual Children's Christmas Party.

Florence was a long-time parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Church (Bayonet Point, FLA) where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Following her move to Pennsylvania, Florence joined the Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex.

Florence was an avid reader who also enjoyed ballroom dancing, ceramics, sudoku, and crossword puzzles. While living in New York, she won a coveted prize for a crossword puzzle contest sponsored by the Long Island Press.

As a child, Florence helped her father at his bakery, learning lifelong skills and becoming an exceptional cook. She took great pride in preparing holiday meals especially the Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen J. Laton, whom she married on June 4, 1949 and who passed away on March 17, 1999.

Florence is survived by three sons, Mark W. Laton, Stephen G. Laton, and Dr. Thomas M. (Colleen) Laton, a brother, Peter N. (Dolores) Forgione, and seven grandchildren.
