Everett Pershing Barker, 97, of Butler Avenue, New Castle, passed away peacefully of natural causes the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at Golden Hill Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Jamestown (Mercer County), a son of Boyd Everett and Mary Jane Craig Barker. Mr. Barker was the founder of Barker Garage Doors, a family business that served the area for more than 50 years. A decorated veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy after graduating from New Castle High School in 1935. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking and he was an accomplished organ player. Mr. Barker belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, New Castle. His wife, the former June Ellen Atkins, whom he married May 27, 1936, passed away on Jan. 19, 2006. He is survived by his two sons, Everett Earl Barker Sr. of New Castle and Alan Lee Barker and his wife, Linda, of Vallejo, Calif.; two grandchildren, Everett Earl Barker Jr. and his wife, Jeanette, and Jon William Barker and his wife, Mary Kay, all of New Castle; five great-grandchildren, Kayla Barker, Jeremy and Tyler Barker and Ava and Jadyn Doyle. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Albert Hutchenson Barker; and a sister, Etta Lucile Nolan. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Peggy Suhr-Barkley, interim pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the New Castle Honor guard prior to the funeral service. Interment will be held privately in Oak Park Cemetery.
