Evelyn D. Middleswarth, formerly of Hermitage and York, PA, passed away peacefully at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2017 in Clepper Manor Nursing Home, Sharon. She was 94.
Mrs. Middleswarth was born October 5, 1922, in Kimmel, PA, Bedford County, a daughter of Albert N. and Clara M. Hengst Close. She was raised in King, Bedford County and was a 1941 graduate of Greenfield Twp. High School, Claysburg, PA.
Evelyn was a homemaker and after raising her children she was employed by various retail stores in York, Pa., most notably the Shiny Brite Company, a manufacturer of Christmas decorations. Christmas being her favorite holiday, she enjoyed decorating her home in a warm, cozy and festive way, as she did for all the holidays.
Evelyn loved to clean and took great pride in keeping an immaculate home. Although she was not partial to cooking, she was particularly known for her ambrosia cake on a hot milk sponge which her family looked forward to on holidays and special occasions. Evelyn enjoyed traveling cross country with her husband and visiting her children and grandchildren.
She was a long time member of Luther Memorial Church, York.
Her husband of more than 67 years, Richard A. Middleswarth, Sr., passed away January 30, 2011.
Surviving are: a daughter, Carol A. Connelly, Sharon; a sister, Janet Shuey (Mark), Bellefonte, Pa; a brother, Jack Close (Mary), Colorado Springs, Co.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Lisa) Connelly, Patrick Connelly and Erica Connelly, and Kimberly Middleswarth Taylor; and five great grandchildren, Lydia, Isaac, Ella, Grace and Ian Connelly.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Richard A. Middleswarth, II.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Sharon Beautification Commission Memorial Fund, c/o Insight Group, 611 South Irvine Ave., Sharon, PA 16146
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Clepper Manor for their kindness and the exceptional care they provided to Evelyn.
There will be no calling hours. The family will have a celebration of life service at a later date.
Interment: National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
