Eugene G. Hoover, 86, of 3803 W. State Street, passed away peacefully at 9:45 a.m. on October 2, 2011 at his residence of natural causes.
He was born on July 5, 1925 in Edinburg Pa., the son of Charles E. and Clare B. Morrison Hoover.
Gene graduated with honors in May of 1943 from Union Township High School and enlisted at the age of seventeen in June of that same year in the United States Navy. A decorated war veteran of WWII, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations aboard the USS Chowanoc. He received the Asiatic Pacific Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, and ultimately the WWII Victory Medal. As a Sonarman Second Class, he was awarded the Navy Unit Citation for his heroism in the Philippines. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he married the former Wilma A. Leeper on October 18, 1946. He was employed as an electrician at the former Michigan Limestone and Carbon Limestone, Hillsville, Pa. He retired as Superintendent from New Castle Battery on December 31, 1987 where he had worked for 38 years.
Civically, Gene served on the Board of Directors for both the Edinburg Area Independent School District, and the Union Area School District.
He was the Past Conservation Chairman for the Mahoning Sportsmen's Club, past member of the New Castle Pistol Club, and past Chairman for the Mahoning Township Zoning and Hearing Board. He was a charter member of the Mahoning Township Volunteer Fire Department.
An accomplished musician, Gene sang and played both harmonica and guitar for his band the Cornshuckers in the 1970's and 80's. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife Wilma, at home, his son and daughter in law Douglas A. Hoover and Kristy L Hoover, Edinburg, a sister Alice L Constantine, Vacaville, CA; two granddaughters, Jami Lynnn Straley and her husband Melvin, and Kaci Ann Symons and her husband Russell, and one grandson, Scott Joseph Hoover and his wife Vanessa; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Darren Lee Hoover, and two brothers, Donald and Glenn Hoover.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to7 p.m. on Thursday in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 111 W. Falls St.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dennis L. Bupp officiating.
Full military honors will be provided by the New Castle Area Honor Guard in the funeral home prior to the service.
