Obituary

After a brave three-year battle with squamous cell carcinoma, we lost our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Eugene P. "Buddy" Guerino Jr. He passed peacefully at home in Farrell with his loved ones by his side on Sunday, June 12, 2016. He was 66.

Buddy was the third child born to Lucille M. Palmer and Eugene P. "Snaps" Guerino Sr. on Jan. 4, 1950, in Sharon.

Buddy grew up in Farrell and attended Farrell schools.

After graduation, he camped his way across the United States with friends and visited all major sites and monuments. When he returned to Farrell, he said, "There's no place like home," and he meant it because he truly never wanted to leave it again.

Buddy enlisted in the Army and had his basic training at Fort Polk in Louisiana. He served in the 4th Armored Division of the National Guard, Farrell, until he was honorably discharged in 1976.

Buddy married the love of his life, Rhonda (Apa) Kocsis, on March 4, 1989, in their home in Farrell. They shared 27 years of love, laughter and family.

Buddy retired from the former Sharon Steel Corp., Farrell, after 25 years of service, and then worked at Goldstein's Furniture for 10 years until he retired in 2012.

Before his illness, Buddy loved celebrating the holidays with an annual Christmas Day open house. He would dress up as Santa and visit many family members and friends with young children. He loved hosting family gatherings for birthdays and game nights. He never hesitated to let the extended family use the house for celebrations. He loved being surrounded by his loved ones.

One of Buddy's greatest joys was making people laugh. You could have the worst possible day and he could make you laugh and forget all about your troubles. His mother always said that he missed his calling and should have been a comedian.

Buddy also had a serious side to him, which included attributes of total honesty, obeying the law and loyalty to his family and country. He was almost fanatical when it came to flying the American flag. As soon as it began to show wear, the flag was appropriately disposed of and a new one was flying in its place, not just on holidays but every day.

He loved to garden and was on the constant quest for the perfect tomato plant. He would always share with the neighborhood. He also enjoyed evenings around the fire pit with his brother, sister-in-law and neighbors, drinking a few beers, talking and laughing.

Along with his wife Rhonda, he leaves two daughters to treasure his memory, Allyson Knott (Fred), North Hanover, N.J.; and Julia Guerino (Bill Hilderhoff), Irwin, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Mason, Abigail and Chelsea Knott, North Hanover.

He also leaves his brother, James Guerino (Lorraine), Farrell; a sister, Patty Hoffman, West Middlesex; a sister-in-law, Brenda Apa Burleson (Jim), Shenango Township; a brother-in-law, John Apa (Tracy), Hermitage; and Connie Muna, Farrell, who was like a sister to him; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Doris Apa, Hermitage; his Uncle Gus and Aunt Tiki Guerino, Farrell; 15 nieces and nephews; 14 great-nieces and -nephews; and three great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Also left are his sweet dog, Paisana, and silly cat, Claudia, that gave him great comfort during his illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jeanne Guerino Whitaker; and a brother-in-law, David Hoffman.

Special thanks for the fantastic care given to our loved one by Dr. Raymond Wynn, Dr. William Spielvogle, UPMC Cancer Center staff at Horizon, Dr. James Ohr and the oncology team at Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, Dr. Robert Multari and his staff and Family Hospice and Palliative Care. Bud appreciated all the efforts that were made on his behalf.

Memorial donations can be made in Bud's name to the local branch of The Salvation Army, 600 Fisher Hill, Sharon, PA 16146; or to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 1965 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Bud's final thoughts to his family and friends, "Remember no matter how bad you think you have it in life, there is always someone worse off than you; be thankful for what you have and do an act of kindness for a stranger as often as you can. Later!"

Do Not Stand By My Grave And Weep
By Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Calling hours: Although Bud was a spiritual person, he did not follow any particular organized religion and requested no viewing, funeral or memorial service.

Service: A memorial service will be held at a later date.
