Obituary

Emil F. Tobias of Middletown, NJ, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.

He was born in Farrell, PA and was the first of six children born to George & Anna Gumca (Tobis) Tobias who were immigrants from Czechoslovakia.

He was an alumnus of St. Ann's Parish School, Farrell High School and Rutgers University, Brunswick, NJ.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1938 to 1940, then in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, enduring World War II in the Pacific Theater. He ultimately achieved the rank of Captain in the Medical Administration Department.

Emil ended his service in Okinawa, then met his wife Marion Hanville, an Army nurse, and married his love on March 20, 1946 on the USS General O.H. Ernst, Okinawa, Japan.

After his return from war, Emil & Marion moved back to New Jersey. He worked for Fidelity Union Bank in Newark, NJ and worked arduously to become Vice President. Emil retired in 1985 and he and his wife relocated to Cape Cod, MA.

He was very active in Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church in Brewster, MA, the Dennis Senior Center, SCORE (Service Corp to Retired Executives), the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club and then with St. James Catholic Church in Red Bank, NJ.

One of Emil's favorite pastimes was traveling extensively in the United States; first camping and then by motor home with Marion. Eventually, they decided to be near their children, Suzanne and Richard, and they moved to Middletown, NJ.

He is survived by his daughter Suzanne Tobias, New York, NY; a son, Richard Tobias (Jennifer); five grandchildren, Alicia Tobias, Richard Tobias (Heather), Adam Tobias (Krista), and Justin and Bryan Maurer; four great-grandchildren, Danny and Elee Smith, Richie and Jack Tobias; one brother, Paul P. Tobias (Ethel "Kess"), Grove City, PA; sister-in- law, Louise M. Tobias, Poway, CA; and a brother- in- law, Donald E. Decker, Volant, PA. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Judith Tobias Delaney (Thomas), Cave Creek, AZ, Annette Tobias Grande, Rowlett, TX , LouAnn Tobias-Tuttle (Barton), Poway, CA, Dennis Tobias (Debra), Mercer, PA, Rodney Tobias (Kim) Grove City, PA, Cynthia Decker Turose (Edward), Volant, PA. Donald Decker (Sherry), Hermitage, PA, Robert Decker (Susan), Grove City, PA, Dixie Sweesy Vasconi, Sharon, PA, David Vasconi (Jane), John Vasconi (Anna Marie) and Sandra Vasconi Radachy (Eric) all of Hermitage, PA and Mary Beth Vasconi Copper (Ernst), New Castle, PA.

Emil was preceded in death by his wife Marion Hanville, who passed away on July 29, 2015, after 69 years of marriage. Also preceding him in death were two brothers Andrew S. Tobias and Albert G. Tobias, Sharon, PA; two sisters Marion T. Decker, Volant, PA and Leona B. Vasconi, Hermitage, PA; his sister-in-law, Eileen Furey Tobias; his brother-in-law, William G. Vasconi; his nephew, William K. Vasconi, Sharon, PA and nephew-in-law James S. Grande, Rowlett, TX.

Uncle Emil, thank you for the memories and for the impact that you had on our lives. You will never be forgotten. As you would always say, "May the Good Lord take a liking to you and be good to yourself. God bless and goodnight."

Private funeral services were held with the Rev. Ariel Robles of St James R. C. Church.

Emil was buried along side his wife Marion in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Both were buried with military honors.
