Obituary

Elsie Lee Laslow, 96, of Farrell passed away Thursday evening, December 31, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Elsie was born July 2, 1924, in Farrell, to Andrew Madura and Mary (Dvoryak) Madura. She graduated from Farrell High School in 1942 and worked as a cake decorator at a local bakery.

During World War II, Elsie worked as a steel plate burner at the Ordinance Plant in Sharon, making tanks for the war effort. She then joined the Army Nurse Corps and graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Youngstown, Ohio. Although the war ended before she could be called to active duty, Elsie served her country by working at Hines Veterans Hospital in Chicago, IL.

Upon returning to Farrell, Elsie married the love of her life, Ernie Laslow, on September 4, 1948. Elsie and Ernie raised four children: Keith, Janet, Ernie, and Gary. For 40 years, Elsie worked as a recovery room nurse at Sharon General Hospital.

Elsie was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage, and a member of the Dorcus Society. An avid baker, she was well known for her apple squares, apple pies, and birthday cakes. Elsie missed her calling as a photographer and loved to take pictures of family and friends.

Her family, and especially her grandchildren, were the light of her life. She surrounded them with love and kindness. Elsie loved family reunions, birthdays, and the annual Christmas Eve Gathering after the evening church service.

Elsie and Ernie were married for 72 years. They loved to travel and visited all 50 states and Europe. They especially loved to visit the beach and their annual week at Treasure Lake.

Elsie was truly an angel of mercy and was always there to help family, friends, and strangers in times of need. Her exceptional and radiant kindness served as a comfort and a gift to all who knew her. Her generous heart always remained thoughtful, giving, and nurturing to others.

She leaves behind her husband Ernest Laslow; a son, Keith Laslow and his wife Mary Jo; a daughter, Janet Thiel and husband Timothy; a son, Ernest Laslow and wife Dona; and a son, Gary Laslow and wife Mildred; six grandchildren, Ryan, Alyson, Mikaila, Erin, Andrew, and Lea; a great-grandchild, Rowan, and another great-grandchild on the way.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by six sisters, Ann Kaska, Mabel Waltz, Ethel Bryant, Helen Cervenak, Marge Zippay, and Dorothy Carine; and three brothers, Andrew Madura, John Madura, and Donald Madura.

The family would like to thank Dr. David D'Amore and the Sharon Regional Health System Hospice Service for their thoughtful care.

Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Dorcus Society, 3325 Morefield Rd., Hermitage.

Due to health concerns presented by the Covid-19 virus, the service will be held privately and broadcasted via livestream at 11 a.m. Thursday (1-7-21).
