IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Taylor
Sampson
November 17, 1934 – December 17, 2024
Elizabeth T. "Betsy" Sampson, 90, of Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at her home on December 17 with her three children by her side. Betsy was born in Sharon on November 17, 1934, to Elizabeth B. (Purdie) and Robert McCandless. After graduating from Sharon High School in 1952, she attended the nursing program at Sharon General Hospital, graduating as an RN in 1955. Betsy worked in the OR at Sharon General until her children were born. Later in life, she worked as an RN at a local nursing home.
On October 19, 1957, she married Christopher Sampson, Jr., an Iowa transplant stationed at the U.S. Airbase in Vienna, OH. They met at a St. Patrick's Day mixer where he invited her to "trip the light fantastic".
Betsy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was bitten by the golf bug and enjoyed her leagues at the Sharon Country Club and other local courses. She very much enjoyed participating in local golf scrambles with her husband. Betsy also looked forward to her nurses' reunions over the years. Nursing training held many fond memories with many of her classmates remaining as lifelong friends.
While not an extensive traveler, she did enjoy family trips. Noteworthy vacations included a 50th wedding anniversary trip to New England featuring a memorable dinner at the Top of the Pru in Boston, several trips to Cape Cod (Chatham) with her kids and her grandchildren enjoying all that the Cape has to offer (the beach, the lakes, whale watching, lobster); an 80th birthday celebration in Kiawah Island, SC golfing on championship courses; and a trip out west to Scottsdale, AZ to experience the desert and see the awe-inspiring rock formations in Sedona.
She was involved with the Sharpsville Women's Club and donated countless hours at the Little League concession stand when her son was playing ball. She was a good seamstress making all the outfits for her daughters' high school and college dances. Betsy was an enthusiastic handyman, willing to give any project "a go" before calling the professionals. She enjoyed local theater productions and concerts, walking in Buhl Park, and a good frozen margarita. Betsy also harbored a particular fondness for immaculately clean windows.
Betsy is preceded in death by her husband, Chris, and is survived by her children, Liz (Epping, NH, partner Donna Houle), Kirsten (Gaithersburg, MD), Christopher (Sharpsville), and two grandchildren David and Elizabeth. A devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Betsy will be greatly missed.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Shenango Valley Animal Shelter, 2599 Broadway Rd., Hermitage, PA 16148.
