Eleanor Annette Shaffer, 78, of New Castle passed away on Thursday afternoon, May 7, 2015, in Golden Hill Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 22, 1937, in New Castle. She was a daughter of Anthony and Marie Onasch Kelliher. She was a 1954 graduate of New Castle High School. In 1957, she received her registered nurse certificate from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing. Eleanor was a loving and caring homemaker to her husband and children. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church and its guild. She was a volunteer with St. Francis Hospice for 12 years. Her husband, William Lafayette Shaffer, whom she married July 29, 1958, passed away Feb. 10, 2011. Eleanor is survived by one son, Tim E. Shaffer, and his husband, David Hobson, of Indianapolis; a daughter-in-law, Gaila Shaffer of Warrensburg, Mo.; two granddaughters, Cortney Shaffer of Warrensburg, Mo., and Megan Hopkins and her husband, Robert, of Greenwich, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Eleanor Hopkins and Kaden Shaffer. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Ann Shaffer; a son, Thomas W. Shaffer; two brothers, Joseph and David Kelliher; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Shaffer. The family suggests memorial contribution may be made in her name to Celtic Hospice and Palliative Care Fund, Office of Fund Development 4818 Liberty Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa. 15224. In keeping with Eleanor's wishes, her family will hold private services. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the J.
