Edward 'Dempsey' Zappa, Farrell, passed away unexpectedly at 3:58 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell. He was 75.
Mr. Zappa was born March 6, 1937 in Sharon, a son of Edmund and Dolphine Smith Zappa.
He was a 1955 graduate of Farrell High School and attended Penn State and Youngstown State Universities.
Ed retired in 1992 from Republic Storage Systems, Canton, Ohio, where he was employed for thirty years in the sales and marketing departments. Following his retirement, he worked in the same capacity for Lyon Metal Products, which is based in Chicago, IL, for eight years.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Sharon. Ed was a member of the Farrell Area School Board for many years and was instrumental in arranging his high school class reunions and monthly luncheons.
He served with the US Army Reserves. A Free and Accepted Mason, he was a member of Lodge # 810, Hermitage, and the Zem Zem Shrine, Erie. Ed took great pleasure in photography and sharing his photo's with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, tending to his yard and had a fondness for animals. Above all, he loved his family and the time he shared with them, particularly his grandsons who were his greatest source of pride. Dempsey, as many knew him, will be remembered as a jovial man who enjoyed people.
Surviving are: his wife of 51 years, the former Bernie Aiello, whom he married October 8, 1960; two daughters, Susan Zappa and her husband Parker Dunlap, Butler, PA; and Jill Littleton and her husband Matthew, Gibsonia, PA; and two grandsons, Jack and Matthew Littleton. He also leaves three sisters, Patricia Sabatino, Sharpsville; Virginia Shufflebarger and her husband Earl, Mentor, Ohio; and Eleanor Manning, Sharon; and two brothers, Louis Zappa and his wife Elaine, Hermitage; and Patrick Zappa and his wife Nancy, Sharpsville.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony's Church, 804 Idaho St., Sharon, PA 16146.

Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012, in St. Anthony's Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Matthew Reyuchan, pastor of St. Stephen's Church, Oil City, as celebrant.
