Edward Michael Seginak of Sharon passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, March 3, 2015, in his residence. He was 84. Mr. Seginak was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Sharon, a son of Michael and Anna Seginak. He was a graduate of Sharon High School and received his bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University. While attending YSU, he was co-captain of the golf team, for which he had the lowest stroke average for two years. He served with the Air Force. Ed was a biology teacher at Badger High School, Kinsman, and later taught at Howland (Ohio) High School for 23 years before retiring in July 1986. He was a member of the National Education Association. Ed was a standout athlete and one of the top softball players and golfers in the Shenango Valley. He pitched fast-pitch softball in the Shenango Valley Independent League from 1950-1952 and had six no-hit, norun games while leading the league in strikeouts. He was a member of the Shenango Valley allstars in softball. He was a champion golfer and was secretary-treasurer of Penn-Ohio Golf League while serving as captain of the Sharon entry. He set course records at the former Leeland Golf Course and Oak Tree Country Club. He was a member of the squad that won the Pennsylvania State Public Links team championship and he was winner of numerous best-ball tournaments. Ed was a two-time and inaugural winner of the prestigious Punch McDowell Cup tournament, which was held at the former Sharon Country Club, and a four-time senior champion. He won club championships at both Leeland and Tam O'Shanter golf courses. He coached boys golf and girls softball at Badger High School and served as playground supervisor for Sharon School District. For his many athletic accomplishments, he was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1994. Ed was a member of Avalon Golf and Country Club at Buhl Park and also enjoyed fishing. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Totin, whom he married June 2, 1956; a daughter, Jean Binger and her husband Charles; and two grandchildren, Katherine and David Binger, all Hudson, Ohio; and a sister, Dolores "Dee" Willson, Hermitage. Ed was preceded in death by his parents. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
