Earl "Stompy" F. Jones of Farrell passed away at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017, in his home. He was 73.
Mr. Jones was born July 8, 1944, in Kittanning, PA, a son of James Wingate and Clacy M. Jackson. He was adopted and raised by his uncle and aunt, Strother and Onie Jones. Stompy was a 1962 graduate of Farrell High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Stompy was a highly skilled self-employed handyman for many years. He was also employed as a shipping supervisor at the former Sharon Steel; and worked at the former Van Huffel Tube Corp., Warren, OH; the former General American Transportation Corp. (GATX), Masury, OH; Prince of Peace, Farrell; and Goodwill, Hermitage. He retired in 2007.
Stompy was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church, Farrell. He was a life time member of the VFW, served as post adjutant for 47 years, at the former New Murray Bell VFW, Post 7597, Farrell, and was past commander for District 28 county council.
Stompy was a sports enthusiasts, he enjoyed boxing and football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved to dance, listen to music, and play cards, but his biggest joy was spending time with his family.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Christine Lewis, whom he married in 1979, in Warren, OH; his mother, Clacy Jackson, Ford City, PA; his children; Ila Nelson and her husband Torriano "Toot", Austintown, OH; Darian Jones and his companion Lamona Williams; Charles Davis and his companion Tina McGee; Reginald? Davis and his wife Kendra, all of Sharon; Danielle Ivey, New Castle; Alan Davis; Earl Davis and his wife Kelly; Jackson Jones and his wife Mandi; and Jermaine Jackson and his wife Jocelyn, all of Farrell; two sisters, Judy Brown; and Leslie Wingate, both of Oxon Hill, MD; a brother, James Wingate and his wife Melvina, Oxon Hill, MD; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; Mother in law Gladys Lewis, Masury, OH; sister in law Deborah Sanders, Sharon, PA; and Leann Adolphsen and her husband Arthur, Youngstown, OH; and a host of nieces and nephews; and longtime friends, Jimmy Smith and his wife Linda; Charles Richard Henry and his wife Lashonia, both of Farrell; Bennie Thomas, Youngstown; and many other close friends.
Stompy was preceded in death by his father; his adoptive parents; a brother, John F. Wingate; and former wife Lorraine Walker Jones.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2017, in Friendship Baptist Church 339 Spearman Ave., Farrell.
