Dorothy Louise Formichella, Hermitage, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 85. Dorothy was born March 4, 1929, in Farrell, a daughter of Frank J. and Leona Schafer Zagger. A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Hickory High School in 1947. She also graduated in 1950 from the former Christian H. Buhl School of Nursing, which is now Sharon Regional Health System's nursing school. She worked as a registered nurse in maternity and newborn nursery and was employed intermittently for what is now Sharon Regional Health System, while rearing her family. She worked from the 1950s until her retirement in 1987. Mrs. Formichella was a charter member of Notre Dame Church, Hermitage, where she was a member of the former Ave Maria Society and was a small group facilitator. She was a member of Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she dedicated her life to her family, for whom she loved to cook and bake. She also loved gardening and taking an occasional trip with friends to local casinos. Her husband, Philip A. Formichella, whom she married Nov. 28, 1950, passed away Nov. 22, 2011. She is survived by three daughters, Diane Sterling, Hermitage; Ruth Davis and her husband Brian, Sharpsville; and Amy Mead and her husband Ted, Kernersville, N.C.; three sons, Philip F. Formichella and his wife Olga, Laurel, Md.; Mark Formichella and his wife Susan, Hermitage; and Paul Formichella and his wife Mary Ann, Pittsburgh; her grandchildren, Bradley Sterling and his wife Roberta, Michelle Sterling Leech and her husband Nicholas, Brian Sterling, Matthew Formichella, Stephen Formichella, John Coyne and his wife Nicole, Daniel Coyne, Rachel Davis, Aaron Mead and his wife Kaylor, Corey Mead and his wife Elizabeth, Cara Mead, Katherine Formichella, Nicholas Formichella and Joseph Formichella; her stepgrandchildren, Sara Youtichene-Geraci and her husband Fabrizio, and Anasthasia Subbotina; her great-grandchildren, Kayla, Marissa and Jacob Sterling, Tyler Coyne, and Zackary Leech; and her stepgreat-grandchildren, Nicholas Hanahan, Jania Tillery, Alessio Geraci, Ugo Geraci and Flavio Geraci. She also leaves her brothers, Frank A. Zagger, North Fort Myers, Fla.; and Kenneth L. Zagger and his wife Eileen, Hermitage.
