Dorothy L. Crunkleton Taylor, 82, of 210 East Edison Ave., passed away at 4:42 pm Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at her residence.
Dorothy was born on July 16, 1927 in Pittsburgh to the late Jesse G. and Marie Grayson Crunkleton. She moved to New Castle as a young girl and attended New Castle schools. She was a 1945 graduate of New Castle High School.
Dorothy retired from the Penn Power Company in 1990 as a switchboard operator where she worked for 26 years, earlier she had worked in the mailroom as a clerk. She also worked at Shenango Pottery for 14 years as an inspector and prior to that she worked at the G.C. Murphy Store.
She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church and was active in its Women's Missionary Society and at one time served as President of the Society.
Early in her life she was the Troop Leader of Brownie Troop #15 and was active in the North Street School P.T.A. She was a member of the Oziel Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the Paul Laurence Dunbar Reading Circle. Dorothy was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Christian Fellowship Satellite of Challenges ? Options In Aging and was a reader for the children at Head Start. At one time she was a volunteer escort to transport families to see their relatives at Dixmont State Hospital as well as transported patients to attend social events. In 2009 she received the Thomas Farrow Community Service Award given by the NAACP.
Dorothy was a great seamstress and a performing arts enthusiasts who enjoyed attending symphonies and stage productions.
She is survived by her daughter, Roberta "Bobbi" Taylor of New Castle; two brothers, David A. Crunkleton and his wife Hazel of New Castle and John Crunkleton and his wife Janet of Fort Wayne, IN and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Crunkleton of New Castle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George H. Crunkleton and a nephew who was also her Godson, David A. Crunkleton, Jr.
Visitation will be from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 on Thursday in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 West Falls St, New Castle, PA 16101.
A funeral services will be held at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 312 Green Street on Friday at 11:00 A.M., conducted by the Rev. Jeannette Hubbard, Pastor.
Interment will follow in Oak Park Cemetery.
