Donna R. Mort
Hermitage woman helped
many, one at a time
A funeral service will be Tuesday for Donna R. Mort, 3800 Lamor Road, Hermitage, who passed away peacefully 11:04 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, in her home surrounded by her family after an extended illness. She was 91.
Donna was born in Salem, Ohio, on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1924, as was her husband, Robert E. Mort. She was a daughter of Mary Helen Gallagher and Arthur Leo Haessly of Salem.
Donna was always involved in the caring of others, being the oldest of four siblings: William Haessly, Staunton, Va.; Mary Lou Loudon, Salem; and Marjorie Brubeck, Baltimore. She remained close to them throughout her life.
Donna was an alumnus of St. Paul's Parochial School and Salem (Ohio) High School, where she received numerous honors, including the American Legion School Award – twice – for scholarship service, character and courage. She also won solo championships from the Ohio Music Education Associatio, and was honored by the Thespian Club. Donna sang for numerous clubs and organizations.
She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Notre Dame College in Cleveland. Donna majored in music, with her mezzo soprano voice and minored in piano, performing in concerts including with the Cleveland Symphony and was recorded on an album.
Donna and Robert moved to Sharon in 1949, where they raised three children, Robert E. Mort Jr., Patricia Diane Mort and Thomas Arthur Mort. Donna's niece, Mary Kathleen Haessly, lived with the family from a young age and was considered another daughter. Donna had seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Instilled in her was a deep passion and commitment to those less fortunate, especially children and senior citizens.
Donna and her husband were an integral part in helping form the Shenango Valley Urban League. Not long after, the Women's Branch of the Urban League was formed by other dear supporters and herself, called the Shenango Valley Urban League Guild. This tireless group of women organized groups; supported teenage mothers and their children; provided education on parenting, giving nutritional and medical aid; and helped young women in the community with the trails of poverty, raising their children and surviving many life obstacles. Often called, "Miss Donna," friendships were developed between colleagues and those in need that exist to this day. During this time, Donna also used her many skills to help with accounting at her husband's office. She had numerous accounts and handled payroll for several large companies in the area.
Donna's love of people and the earth contributed to her ability to work and empathize with the causes and the endeavors for which she had such passions. Recycling and proper use of air and water were extremely important to her before it became popular and accepted. In the '60s and later she worked with various boards in the community to support "green" efforts. Donna's love of her family and friends always came first. If other commitments were at hand, for instance, helping a family have a home, tutoring disadvantaged children, or going to hear Ralph Nader, Donna included and inspired her children and others. She taught people firsthand how to be strong, loving and self sufficient. She was an avid bridge player, interested in current events and enjoyed spending time in Rhode Island with her son, Tommy, and family. Donna continued to develop a deep love of the oceans and environment. She supported organizations that worked for the conservation of the earth. She loved horseback riding, ice skating, gardening, politics and reading.
Donna was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon, and more recently Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Mort; her son, Robert E. Mort, Jr.; her niece, Mary Kay Haessly; her great-grandchild Alexis M. Stiner; and her sister, Mary Lou Loudon.
Prior to her death, her last request of family was to pass along her deepest wishes. She asked that we love God, family and friends unconditionally and always. Donna hoped that all would honor African- Americans and care for children and seniors in need. Lastly, she felt that we must take care of our earth for future generations. Contributions may be made to the local American Cancer Society.
