Donald Eugene Redmond, Sr., a lifelong resident of Mercer, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2016, in his home. He was 86.

Mr. Redmond was born Feb. 26, 1930, in Mercer, a son of Donald VanWort and Thelma Redmond.

Don retired as a truck driver from the former Golden Dawn Foods, Sharon, where he was employed for 40 years. He served as a volunteer fireman for 15 years at the East End Fire Department, Mercer and early in his life served as a Mercer Boro councilman.

He was a member of Wayside Community Church, Mercer.

A private pilot, he enjoyed flying for many years. He also loved reading, music and being outdoors.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Marguerite E. Johnson, whom he married September 28, 1973; five sons, Donald E., Gary, Michael, Dennis and Terry G. Redmond; two daughters, Carol Baumgartner and Kathy Novotney; two step-daughters, Cherri Thompson and Rebecca Brocklehurst; 25 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; a great grandson; two sisters, Elizabeth Smith and Roberta Kirschman; and a brother, Robert Ryder.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patricia Habbyshaw and Alice Barnes; and three grandsons, Joseph G. Craig, Jr., Ryan Michael Redmond and James Austin Kent.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2016 , and one hour before the service on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 , in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Rev. Lester A. Rowan, pastor of Wayside Community Church, and Rev. Kenton Shaw, former pastor, officiating.

Interment: New Findley Cemetery, Mercer.
