Donald J. Gilliland of Sharon passed away of natural causes at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, in his home, after a brief illness. He was 74. Mr. Gilliland was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Sharon, a son of Robert Frank and Mary Loretta Christenson Gilliland. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1959 graduate of Sharon High School. Don was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 20 years before its closing in 1984. He then worked 13 years as an agent for Prudential Life Insurance Co. and later at George Junior Republic, Pine Township. He was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. "Gypsy," as many of his friends knew him, was an active member of American Legion Post 299, Sharon, and its golf and billiard leagues. He also was a member of Benevolent Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon, and Moose Club, Farrell. Surviving are: a son; a daughter; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Dr. Robert F. Gilliland Jr. and his wife, Linda, Akron; and H. Richard Gilliland and his wife, Ramona, Liberty Township, Trumbull County. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, the former Joann M. Lisko. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148. Calling hours: None at Don's request.
