Obituary

Donald Lewis Burger, 2400 Garden Way, formerly of Biscayne Drive, both Hermitage, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 87. Mr. Burger was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Wheatland, a son of Martin P. and Sadie E. Lewis Burger. A lifelong area resident, he was a 1946 graduate of Sharon High School. Don served with the Army during World War II and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. He was a member of Hickory VFW Post 6166, Hermitage. He retired on March 1, 1986, as a high-lift operator from Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant, where he was employed for 40 years. Don was a former member and deacon of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township. He was a blood donor through the American Red Cross for many years and donated more than 40 gallons of blood during his life. Don enjoyed 20 to 30 miles per day bike trips, gardening and family activities. His wife, the former Phyllis Neiman, whom he married July 14, 1950, passed away June 1, 2013. Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Laverty and her husband Brian, Hermitage; and Sandra Harmon, Sharon; a son, Donald Lee "Rusty" Burger and his wife Sue, Shenango Township; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Chester "Chet" Burger, Hermitage; and seven special nieces and nephews, including Georgiana (Burger) Luce and her husband Dan, whom he loved as a daughter, Shenango Township. Besides his wife and parents, Don was preceded in death by five brothers, Martin, Warden, Emmett, George and Herbie Burger; a sister, Sara Quarterson; and a granddaughter, Ashley Harmon, who died in 1991. Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. today (6-12-15) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday (6-13-15) in the funeral home with the Rev. C. Charles Eckles, pastor of IHS Ministries, Hermitage, officiating. Interment: America's Cemetery, formerly Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage, with military honors rendered by the Hickory VFW honor guard.
