Donald L. Black of Hermitage passed away at 3:51 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2015, in UPMC Hospital, Greenville, after a brief illness. He was 80. Mr. Black was born July 12, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Joseph and Anna Shutlock Black. He moved to the area as a child and attended Mercer High School. Don was a heavy equipment operator for Seidle Sand and Gravel Co., Mercer, for more than thirty years and retired in 1998 from Athletes Choice, a family owned business in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage. He was a member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to his camp in Kennerdell. Don was also a skilled carpenter and took pleasure in woodworking and making keepsakes for family members. He also enjoyed trips to local casinos. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Jane McKee, whom he married September 3, 1955, at the residence; three daughters, Cindy Wilds and her husband Jim, Hermitage; Jan Urey, also Hermitage; and Elaine Black and her companion Shawn Zentner, Cincinnati, Ohio; and five grandsons, Matt and Tim Urey; and Justin, Brandon and Jordan Wilds. Don was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elmer and Larry Black. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Humane Society of Mercer County, 3005 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148; or Club Pet, 20 Schaller Rd., Transfer, PA 16154. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday, June 27, 2015, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, officiating. Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
