Obituary

Domenico "Domenic" Lombardi of Brookfield, Ohio passed away at 4 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016 , in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, Ohio, after complications following a fall on Thursday at home. He was 89.

Mr. Lombardi was born September 27, 1926, in Statigliano, Caserta, Italy, a son of Pietro and Cecelia (Raccioppi) Lombardi.

He married the former Phyllis Massaro on June 9, 1956, in St. Bartholomew Church, Sharpsville. Domenic emigrated to the United States in 1950 with his sister, Mary, aboard the SS LaGuardia landing in the Port of New York.

Shortly after coming to America, he began taking English classes at Farrell High School and prepared for his naturalization.

One of his greatest joys and sources of pride was becoming a U.S. citizen. He never missed the opportunity to vote and realized the American dream was attainable with hard work.

Domenic was employed as a railroad conductor at Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant from 1950-1989.

For many years, he installed concrete making sidewalks, porches, driveways and swimming pools in and around the Shenango Valley which bear his initials.

His kind and gentle nature was evident in all facets of his life, from the way he tended his garden to the way he embraced everyone he loved.

He naturally brought lightness to any conversation and interaction and put those around him at ease. His advise always revealed a simplistic truth…."Do what is right for your family."

Domenic was an avid gardener and took pleasure in maintaining his fig trees and grape arbor. He enjoyed canning and making wine and sausage.

He loved babies and children and if there was a baby in the room, Domenic was sure to be holding it. He was considered a friend by many.

He enjoyed going on bus trips, casino day trips and watching news and political television shows. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.

Domenic was an active member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon, where he served as an usher.

He also belonged to the Italian Home, Farrell; and the Apollo Maennerchor Club, Sharon.

Left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife of 60 years, Phyllis, at the residence; two sons, Peter Lombardi and his wife Anne, Brookfield; and Joseph Lombardi and his wife Nicole, Sharpsville; 4 grandchildren, Julianna Lombardi and Dr. Domenic Lombardi, Brookfield; and Leah and Sophia Lombardi, Sharpsville; a sister, Mary Bencivengo, Brookfield; two brothers, Placido Lombardi, MonFalcone, Italy; and Pasqualino Lombardi, Besancon, France; many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States, Canada and Europe; and special friends and neighbors, John Nezdoba and George Durst, who were so helpful during his recent illness.

Domenic was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Luigi and Giuseppe Lombardi, both Italy.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Kennedy Catholic Family of Schools, 2120 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148; or Life Enriching Activities Program (LEAP), 2202 Niles-Cortland Rd., Cortland, Ohio 44410.
