Obituary

Domenic Carl Apisa of Farrell passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 78. Domenic was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Farrell, a son of Domenico and Anastasia Cipriano Apisa. Domenic graduated from Farrell High School in 1954. He graduated in 1961 from Youngstown State University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He moved to the Washington, D.C., area in the early 1960s. In 1963, he was hired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as an electrical engineer at Goddard Space Center. His work at NASA spanned nearly four decades, and he was involved in every major space program, from the Apollo program to the International Space Station. During this time, he married his late wife, Janis Marie Rambo, and raised four children in the Washington, D.C., suburbs. He remained with NASA until retiring in 2000 from Johnson Space Center in Houston, after which he worked with Boeing Aerospace for five years. In 2005, Domenic returned to Farrell to be closer to his brother, sister and lifelong friends. In 2008, Domenic was inducted into Farrell High School's Hall of Fame for his numerous achievements while at NASA. He also was a member of the Wolves Club and current trustee at the Italian Home in Farrell. Besides his local activities, he made many trips to Italy to connect with long-lost relatives. He is survived by his children, Anastasia Apisa; Tia Tutwiler and her husband Tom; Timothy Apisa and his wife Kelly; and Anthony Apisa and his wife Emily; 10 grandchildren, Danielle, Justin, Ethan, Bryce, Benjamin, Lucy, Lindsey, Carson, Zoe and Luke; two great-grandchildren, Tessa and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Janis Apisa, he was preceded in death by his parents, Domenico and Anastasia Apisa; a sister, Betty Bindas; and two brothers, Andrew and Joseph Apisa. Domenic was wellloved by his family, friends and community and will be dearly missed. Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday (2-20-15) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St. Sharon. A rosary will be recited at 6:45. Services: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (2-21-15) with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann's Church, as celebrant. A brief prayer service will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the funeral home before leaving for the church. Interment: St. Anthony's Cemetery, Hermitage.
