Obituary

David P MacHarg Jr. Passed away peacefully at 4 Am Tuesday morning November 13 with his family at his side.

David was the Chairman of the MacHarg group of companies, Graham Stamping, Phillips Steel and Wheatland Steel Processing.  He was also the General Partner of 1700 Broadway LTD.

David was born August 15 th 1943 to David P MacHarg Sr. and Mary Tileston MacHarg of Michigan. He attended the prestigious Henry Ford Elementary School located in Greenfield Village and kept in contact with childhood friends throughout his life. He completed his Engineering Degree at Stanford University, and post graduate studies at Duquesne University.

He was most proud of his wife Camille, his children, and grandchildren. He married Camille Vaccaro (MacHarg) on April 9, 1983. Through their love and teamwork, they found and created many ways to be involved with community improvement. They were both passionate supporters of athletics from grade school teams through Pittsburgh professional teams. He was a committed soccer coach for decades, raising generations of players.

His favorite place to relax was an island his grandfather bought after the First World War, located in Ontario Canada.  David loved holding his canoe steady over his favorite fishing spots, often guiding whomever was fishing to catch a "keeper." He went there as a little boy and had memories and stories from every stage of his life.  His children loved to be with him on hikes, and paddles, gunnel jumping, chasing loons, watching sunsets, and playing cards by lantern light. He enjoyed having a strong front paddler, and being able to hit a good clip across quiet water. David got a kick out of the creation of a small driving range on the island. He would hit floating golf balls into the lake, where crews in canoes would contest shagging the most balls for a small pool of cash. Occasionally he would hit one directly in a canoe, causing them panic and often to nearly spill out. He got a great laugh out of that.

David has been a member of the Sharon Rotary Club since 1974 and was Director of Youth Exchange for many years. He helped with many Rotary projects and was often the first one there and the last to leave. He was given the Rotary Foundation Major Donor Award and was the first person to receive the John Fabian Award honoring the individual that most exemplified the Rotary Four Way Test. In business and in life he exemplified the Rotary Four Way Test: 1 Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER RELATIONSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?  He lived the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."

David was committed to exercise and could often be seen running, biking, or walking his dogs in Buhl Park. He logged tens of thousands of miles in laps. He carried on the tradition of being an excellent golfer handed down by his father. He successfully completed the inaugural Iron Man World Championship held in Hawaii, as well as many triathlons before and after.

David served his country as the head of the motor pool at the Hermitage Pennsylvania National Guard, B Battery, 229 Artillery for 6 years. As a successful business man he established an open door policy, creating a family atmosphere that has continued for decades. He served his community and family selflessly day in and out.

He is survived by his wife Camille and his children David MacHarg III, Sarah MacHarg (Thomas Price), Meredith Schlichtkrull (Jeff), Jeffery MacHarg (Lorri), Jon MacHarg and grandchildren, Lucas, Brady and Sydney MacHarg, and Maddie Schlichtkrull, and his loyal K9 companion Ronald. Also siblings Mary Congoran (Tom), Dr. Margaret MacHarg (Ron), Barbara Smith (David), Marcia Caddell  (Joe), and Peter MacHarg.

David donated his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry, a foundation designed to promote science and education. A private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
