Obituary

Daniel Monroe Cowher Jr., Cleland Mill Road, New Castle, passed away peacefully at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday (1-20-11) in Jameson Hospital with his family at his side after an extended illness. He was 80.

Mr. Cowher was born in New Castle, August 11, 1930 the son of Daniel M. Cowher Sr. and Clara (Boos) Cowher.

A Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Daniel reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged with the Good Conduct Medal on August 29, 1952.

He previously worked as a certified Master Mechanic for several local businesses including Mahoning Valley Sand, Universal Rundle, and Reed Oil Company.

He was a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish, New Castle.

Daniel was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, New Castle.

He loved the outdoors and working on his farm and simply passing time at home on his back porch.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who will miss him dearly.

His wife the former Rosemarie Mulcahy who he married on May 15, 1954, survives at home.

He also leaves 7 children, Daniel Cowher and his wife Colleen, Merrimac, MA, Tom Cowher and his wife Carey, New Castle, John Cowher and his wife Cheryl, Roanoke VA, Mary Beth (Cowher) Braatz and her husband Ed, Earl Cowher and his wife Kathy, Eric Cowher and his fiancé April, Kathleen (Cowher) Wilkins and her husband Ray, all of New Castle, and a daughter in law Carolyn McQuiston, Enon Valley, 18 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters, Clara 'Bebe' Coyne, New Castle, Virginia McLaughlin and her husband Robert, Barbara Ferrucci and her husband William, Sally Carangi and her husband Thomas, all West Pittsburg, Eileen Onofray and her husband Ed, Warren, Pa., one brother Hal Cowher and his wife Rita, New Castle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kevin 'Casey' Cowher.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday (1-23-11) from 1 to 4 p.m. in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 111 West Falls Street, New Castle.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Monday (1-24-11) in St. Mary's Church with Rev. Victor Molka pastor as the celebrant.

Full military honors will be rendered by the New Castle Area Veterans Honor Guard.
