Funeral services will be held Saturday for Dale Frederick Mershimer, Hermitage, who passed away peacefully Tuesday (12-8-15) from complications of congestive heart failure. He was 86.
He was born August 3, 1929 one of six children born to Charles Lee and Mary Elizabeth Snyder Mershimer. He was raised in Butlery County and graduated from Slippery Rock High School.
On January 5, 1948 he enlisted in the United States Army where he reached the rank of Corporal in a Heavy Tank Company, the14th Infantry Regiment. He served at both Camp Carson and Camp McCoy and was honorably discharged in January of 1950.
He was employed as an insurance agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and later became a carpenter with the D. L. Mershirmer Construction Company owned by his brother.
As a carpenter, he belonged to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 922.
Dale held memberships to the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge # 55, and the former German Home in Farrell.
In his earlier years Dale was a standout basketball player. He enjoyed a good round of golf, hunting and fishing, and simply spending time with his family and friends.
His wife the former Eleanor J. Schlicht whom he married on June 9, 1951, passed away unexpectedly on April 2, 1978 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He is survived by his daughters Loreen Mershimer and her spouse Roberto Mustacchi, Chicago, and Kate Mershimer and her spouse Sherry Householder, Harrisburg, and his son Frederick Mershimer, Brooklyn; his life partner of twenty-five years Diane Holzshu, his two grandchildren, Robert and Caterina Mustacchi.
He is also survived by the son of Dianne Holzshu, Steve Sipos and his spouse Teena, and his two children Jordon and Haylee Sipos.
He leaves his brother, Paul Mershimer and his wife Margeurite, Slippery Rock, and Georgia Burns, Freedom, Pa.
In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his two brothers, his twin Donald, and Charles Mershimer, and a sister Anna Mershimer.
